EngagedMD improves informed consent, study reveals

Summary

A study published in Fertility & Sterility emphasized the effectiveness of the EngagedMD multimedia platform in enhancing informed consent for fertility treatments such as ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and in vitro fertilization (IVF). The report also explored challenges posed by traditional consent methods and underscored the vital role of informed consent in fertility treatments.

According to the study, patients using the EngagedMD platform reported improved knowledge, satisfaction, and decision-making control, facilitating a more informed consent process. Additionally, providers favored the platform for its ease of implementation.

Study Design

The study retrospectively analyzed feedback about the EngagedMD platform from a survey of 6,333 patients who underwent ovulation induction, IUI, or IVF treatments at 13 different U.S. fertility clinics.

Using the EngagedMD platform, patients accessed videos, animations, and interactive quizzes to develop a greater understanding of the risks and consequences of their treatment. Patients were then asked to provide feedback on the platform's effectiveness in improving their understanding of the informed consent process.

Key Findings

The study found that the EngagedMD platform was highly effective in improving patient comprehension and satisfaction related to the informed consent process.

  • 93% felt the media platform was intuitive
  • 88% said it better prepared them to consent to treatment
  • 83% said it increased satisfaction with their care

The platform was particularly helpful for patients with limited health literacy and those who were not fluent in English. Also noted, patients who used the platform were more likely to ask questions and engage in discussions with their providers about their treatments.

Providers noted that EngagedMD enhanced communication with patients, helped address their concerns more comprehensively, and saved time and resources by minimizing the need for repeated explanations and clarifications.

Conclusion

Using EngagedMD improves patient knowledge, satisfaction, and control over medical decisions, better equipping them to give informed consent. The platform was also well-liked by providers, who noted its easy implementation into clinic workflows.
